Environmental Education
The Fairmount Park system provides many opportunities to learn about our environment, its inhabitants, and what
we can do to protect them. Environmental education is a very important component of our Park system. We're guided
by our mission which is "To promote understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of Fairmount Park and our total
environment. From neighborhood to region to world, our actions impact our environment and our environment impacts
our quality of life."
Below you'll see the many ways to get involved with our environmental education efforts:
School/Group Programs
- Take a class field trip to one of our environmental education centers. We can create and implement curricula which address environmental education goals, both locally and nationally. Learn about biological and/or ecological concepts such as habitats, biodiversity, food webs, riparian zones, endangered species and ecosystems. Work with Fairmount Park staff, meet with community and academic representatives and consult with scientists and educators.
- Schedule an outreach program to your school or youth group and learn about topics such as trash, natural lands restoration, watersheds and careers in science.
Home School Program
- Bring your kids (or parents) to a home school lesson at the Wissahickon Environmental Center.
Public Programs
- Learn through our intimate public programs such as birding workshops, meadow walks, full moon hikes and winter tree identification.
- Have fun at our week-long summer camp adventures for groups and individuals in either Pennypack Park or Wissahickon Valley Park.
- Develop team building, problem solving, self-esteem and cooperation skills in program participants.
Environmental Activities
- Get on-site field experiences which investigate natural cycles, forest ecology, environmental issues, animal adaptations, watersheds and more.
- Be a part of volunteer, restoration and service-learning opportunities which benefit our environment. You'll help remove invasive plants, maintain trails and stabilize streambanks. By learning and doing, you'll better understand how we impact our environment and how our environment impacts our quality of life.
Events
- Make a date to attend one of our large public festivals which include Sheep Shearing, Maple Sugaring, and Apple Fest. Visit our calendar of events to see what's going on in your area.
Services
- Take advantage of our additional services such as teacher training, birding resources and curriculum consultation.
Information
- Find out more about our trail maps, public program calendars, tee shirts and bird seed.
Programs are available year-round at Pennypack Environmental Center,
Wissahickon Environmental Center and
Fox Chase Farm.
