Places to Go
If you're thinking of visiting Fairmount Park but aren't quite sure what to do or where to go, you can find plenty of ideas in this section. Our 9,200-acre park system offers many opportunities to have fun, to relax and to learn.
Fairmount Park has over 200 historic properties, the most in the state of Pennsylvania.
Take time to tour the historic sites. Each site has its unique history, architecture and style. Or visit the few remaining structures from the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. This event makes fascinating reading too. Learning more about Philadelphia through Fairmount Park will add a whole new chapter to your knowledge of the "City of Brotherly Love's" history.
See all kinds of great art, treat your ears to honeyed melodies or watch a polar bear as it swims within inches of your nose. There are several museums, performance venues and even the first zoo in America located on Fairmount Park property. From the American Swedish Historical Museum to the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, Fairmount Park offers a wonderful pallet of activities awaiting your discovery.
Only have an hour for lunch? Trek on over to the park nearest you, visit Rittenhthouse or one of its sister squares, or surround yourself with beautiful flowers in one of the Park's gardens. We have lots of picnic tables and benches or bring a blanket or portable chair. Sit back, take a load off, enjoy your lunch and commune with nature.
Want to keep learning alive throughout the summer (and during the school year, of course)? Don't miss a visit to one of the Park's Environmental Centers. Indoor and outdoor (i.e. trees, trails, creeks, wildlife) classrooms provide the perfect venue to learn about our environment.
In addition to museums, performance venues, squares, gardens, designed landscapes, historic houses/sites, a zoo, and park land galore, Fairmount Park also offers overnight accommodations at the Chamounix Youth Hostel, open to folks of all ages, and a couple of restaurants, Valley Green Inn and the soon to open restaurant in the Water Works - with more eateries on the way. Stay tuned.
