Street Tree Information
When you think of green space, what comes to mind? Open, grassy fields, meadows and most certainly, trees! Trees are very important to our environment. They liven up our urban spaces, shade us from the hot sun, absorb noise, filter pollution and may even strengthen neighborhood ties and reduce violence.
Unfortunately our region's tree canopy is decreasing as trees are not being replaced at the same rate of removal. A 2003 study by the USDA Forest Service and American Forests, Inc. in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources released a study estimating that the five county Philadelphia region has lost five million trees over the past 15 years. That's astounding.
As trees are such a large part of Philadelphia's green space (a.k.a. Fairmount Park), we've dedicated a whole section to them. Read on to learn about who's responsible for street trees, whom to contact about your street tree, how to care for your tree, and the City of Philadelphia Recommended Street Tree List.
The Tree Tenders and Tree Vitalize also play an important role in the future of our trees. Click on through to learn more.
